MLB Rangers Not Planning To Change Name Despite Scrutiny

The MLB Rangers have "no immediate plans to change the team's nickname" in the wake of "public scrutiny over the history of the law enforcement agency for which it is named," according to Evan Grant of the DALLAS MORNING NEWS. Following a syndicated column in the Chicago Tribune calling for the team's name to be changed, the Rangers responded with a statement "once again condemning racism and bigotry." Save for connecting the marketing of the team as representing the state of Texas, the team has "no real connection to the law enforcement agency." There are "no tributes or monuments to the law enforcement agency at Globe Life Field." The Rangers are "not the only pro sports franchise to be named for a connection to the law enforcement agency," as the NHL Rangers "also trace their roots to a connection to the organization" (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 6/20). In Ft. Worth, Mac Engel wrote the MLB Rangers "do not need to change their name." Consuming a Rangers baseball game is "not canonizing this dated law enforcement organization." It is plausible most Americans "have no clue the Texas Rangers are anything other than a baseball team." The Rangers "should feel no more pressure to change their name than the Detroit Tigers or New York Mets." Engel: "They are just a baseball team" (Ft. Worth STAR-TELEGRAM, 6/20).
