Big 12 May Move Conference Football Championship Back A Week

A change could force the CFP to wait a week to announce its top four playoff teamsGETTY IMAGES

A working group of Big 12 ADs is looking at the "possibility of moving the conference football championship game back a week from Dec. 5 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington," as the change "would give the conference a built-in makeup week if regular-season games were canceled by COVID-19," according to Chuck Carlton of the DALLAS MORNING NEWS. Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby, who is not a part of the ADs working group, said, "Trying to build in flexibility makes sense." However, he added, "That's not the decision we'll make this kind of year. I hope the season is orderly enough that those kinds of options can be viable. I suspect that we won't have that luxury." Bowlsby said that a decision "may not even come until sometime into the regular season and would carry all kinds of complications and potential dominoes -- from consulting with the Cowboys and AT&T Stadium to ESPN." A change also would conceivably "force the College Football Playoff to wait a week to announce its top four playoff teams and pairings for the New Year's Six bowls." Baylor AD Mack Rhoades, who heads the conference ADs this season and is a member of the working group, said, "Probably conferences are looking at any ways to build in flexibility in the event you're playing 12 games, there's a cancellation of some games and is there the flexibility to make up any one of those games" (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 6/22).
