Questions Follow Certain NFL Owners' Silence On Social Issues

Over the last few days, many who follow the NFL have started to wonder where Jerry Jones isGETTY IMAGES

The NFL's "support of social justice initiatives will ring hollow" until more owners "state unequivocally that they support peaceful protests," and Colin Kaepernick and Eric Reid are given legitimate employment opportunities, according to Ben Volin of the BOSTON GLOBE (6/14). YAHOO SPORTS' Shalise Manza Young wrote a number of owners have issued statements and announced steps to address systemic racism, but over the last few days, "many who follow the league have started to wonder" where Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones is. Jones has "never had a problem sharing his opinion before." However, since George Floyd was killed on May 25, a man "who has never seemed at a loss for words is suddenly silent." This "tells us everything we need to know" (SPORTS.YAHOO.com, 6/12). SI.com's Mike Fisher wrote most sports organizations have "come out with videos, statements and financial pledges to the cause." Fisher: "Some in the NFL are, however, waiting. For what?" Indications are they are "waiting for Jerry." There is "some inaction" in "awaiting Jerry Jones' action" (SI.com, 6/13).

TAKING THE LEAD? In S.F., Scott Ostler wrote now is the time for 49ers CEO Jed York to "seize leadership of the progressive wing of the NFL ownership club." Ostler: "Will any team owner, NFL or otherwise, step forward and announce that he/she will fully support players who protest peacefully?" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 6/14). Meanwhile, York said that he is "confident that the 49ers and the rest of the NFL can kick off as scheduled in September." York said, "There will be a season in some way, shape or form. After seeing the progress of reopening, I am confident in that" (NBCSPORTS.com, 6/13).
