AAC Commissioner Says Testing Will Be Up To Individual Schools

AAC Commissioner Mike Aresco said that it "would be up to the individual schools" on whether student-athletes would be tested in June during their initial return to campuses, according to Sam Blum of the DALLAS MORNING NEWS. Aresco said, “Testing is very complicated right now, and there are a lot of nuances to it. We’re going to leave that up to our schools. We’ll see what protocols they develop.” He added, “Most of our schools, if not all of our schools are -- we don’t know for sure -- are likely to have some compliment of students on campus. If that’s the case, I don’t really see an issue in terms of playing sports" (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 5/31). In Orlando, Matt Murschel reported preparations are "still underway" for the move of the AAC's HQ from Providence, R.I., to Dallas despite the ongoing pandemic. Aresco: “They should finish up [construction] in June and we should be moving our furniture now that travel restriction has eased. I think the plan right now is to delay our move until July as we might have originally thought about June. That’s been on schedule surprisingly so and we’re looking forward to it" (ORLANDO SENTINEL, 5/31).

UCF HAS COMPREHENSIVE PLAN: The SENTINEL's Murschel reported as UCF players and coaches "begin to arrive on campus, they’ll be tested for COVID-19 by healthcare professionals from Orlando Health and the UCF Student Health Services." Everyone also will "go through a screening process that includes having their temperatures checked." They also will be "required to wear masks at all times and to take advantage of additional hand sanitizer stations throughout the buildings." The school last Friday announced that all athletes will "go through a week-long orientation that will include extensive physical exams." They also will "participate in educational sessions to learn behavior required to maintain safe and healthy team environments." Coaches and staff likewise will "go through COVID-19 testing and training." About two-thirds of football players will be "housed in dorms, with plans in place for quarantine or isolation, if needed," and "all athletic facilities will be cleaned overnight." UCF AD Danny White said that his department "hasn’t decided whether there will be additional testing beyond the first wave when athletes and staff return to campus, but he believes testing will happen regularly once the football season kicks off" (ORLANDO SENTINEL, 5/30).
