Sources: Univ. Of Miami Athletics Briefly Furloughing Employees

UM President Julio Frenk said that it is the school's absolute intent to have a football seasonGETTY IMAGES

The Univ. of Miami athletic department is "sending many of its employees on brief furloughs," according to sources cited by Barry Jackson of the MIAMI HERALD. A source said that UM athletic department employees "have been told to take two weeks off -- unpaid -- in June or July." However, a source said that there has been "no indication that Hurricanes coaches have been asked to take pay cuts." UM President Julio Frenk last week said that the school "would lay off employees in June and soon begin furloughs." UM previously announced "pay reductions for top officials and the suspension of both merit-based salary raises and of UM contributions to employee retirement plans." Frenk said that a 15% pay cut for "all senior executive leaders, including himself, plus a 10 percent pay cut for the top percent of earners," saved the school $6M. He added that cuts "could be revised in September or could be extended." Meanwhile, Frenk yesterday reiterated "it is our absolute intent to have a football season." But he "remained noncommittal about whether fans would be in attendance at home games" (MIAMI HERALD, 5/28).

BUDGET CRUNCH: In K.C., Jesse Newell reports the Univ. of Kansas athletic department has "implemented pay cuts and furloughs to all employees as a response to anticipated financial difficulties presented by the coronavirus pandemic." Those making under $50,000 "will be required to furlough for three whole weeks between June 1 and July 25." Those making between $50,000 and $149,000 "will have two options: take a pay reduction" or "take a furlough of up to 10 days." Those making above $300,000 "will take a 10% pay cut" (K.C. STAR, 5/28).
