Bob Uecker Details How He Landed In Memorable Miller Lite Ads

Brewers announcer Bob Uecker became a "national celebrity" in the '70s and '80s in part due to his appearance in the "famous Miller Lite All-Stars ads on television," but that almost did not happen due to loyalty to a former team partner, according to Tom Haudricourt of the MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL. Pabst Brewing sponsored the team at the time, and Uecker said, "Miller had asked me four times to do a spot for them and each time I turned them down." He said he and then-Brewers Owner Bud Selig "had a nice talk" about the situation. Selig asked Uecker to meet with Pabst execs "to see if they could offer anything remotely similar to the Miller Lite All-Stars." After admitting it could not, Pabst "gave Uecker permission to go rogue, beer-wise." Uecker joined a roster of prominent athletes including Ray Nitschke, Joe Frazier and Bubba Smith, among others. He said, "They were such fun, and there were so many great guys doing them. They were the best commercials on television back then" (MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL, 5/13).
