MLB Rangers Bullish On Potential Of Upcoming Drive-In Concert Series

The MLB Rangers this week announced plans for a drive-up concert experience June 4-7 featuring live performances outside the new Globe Life Field, all in a socially distanced environment. Rangers Exec VP/Sports & Entertainment Sean Decker said the idea first came about in mid-to-late March, when Triple 8 Management Founder & Partner George Couri -- whose agency is responsible for all five acts participating -- reached out to him with an inquiry. Decker: "He called and said, 'Hey, have you seen everything that's going on with all these drive-in movies? ... How difficult would it be operationally to do the same thing but in a concert setting?'" From there, Decker and the Rangers started calling officials from every corner, including health experts, Tarrant County and the city of Arlington. "Ultimately, this is where we wound up," he said.

SPONSORS & SPOTS: The series, featuring bands and artists from Texas, is dubbed the QuikTrip Concert in Your Car presented by Energy Transfer. Both sponsors are preexisting Rangers partners. General admission tickets are $40 per vehicle, per night, and special VIP packages cost $80, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Texas Rangers Baseball Foundation to support their ongoing COVID-19 relief efforts. There is a capacity of 400 cars per show, and Decker expects each one will be fully sold out.

MOVING FORWARD: Decker admitted that other artists, managers and agencies have reached out to him about opportunities since the series was announced, adding that he is open to expanding with more concerts and other types of events if things go well. He said, "If you can do this, nothing stops you from putting a big screen up and doing watch parties or movies or whatever the case may be." He believes these sorts of events may become the norm for the time being, saying of when they will be able to move inside Globe Life Field, "It feels like we do have a bit of a ways to go still there. But I'm optimistic that it’s sooner than later."
