Panthers Could Host Camp In Charlotte For First Time Amid Virus

The Panthers have held training camp in Spartanburg, S.C., every year since joining the NFL in '95GETTY IMAGES

The coronavirus pandemic "could prompt" the NFL Panthers to hold their training camp in Charlotte for the first time, as there are "concerns over potential health risks associated with putting 90 players and another 60 or so coaches and staffers" on campus at Wofford College as in previous years, according to Joseph Person of THE ATHLETIC. A team official said that the Panthers "hope they can keep camp at Spartanburg, S.C.," where the team has held training camp every year since joining the NFL in '95 and where it has a contract to return this summer, but the official "did not rule out a contingency plan." If the Panthers "don’t go to Wofford, it seems likely they will hold camp in Charlotte." Panthers Owner David Tepper in November said that the "only two options for training camp were Wofford or the team’s practice facility adjacent to Bank of America Stadium, which includes an indoor bubble built last year" (THEATHLETIC.com, 5/13).

BACK-UP PLANS: In West Virginia, Derek Redd writes Greenbrier Sports Performance Center Public Relations Manager Cam Huffman confirmed an NFL Network's report that the facility was "among those being contacted" to host training camps for NFL teams who may need alternate sites due to the pandemic. Huffman said, "We are hopeful to have NFL teams at The Greenbrier again this summer." The Greenbrier is owned by West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice and was the camp home of the Saints from '14-16 and the Texans from '17-18 (Charleston GAZETTE-MAIL, 5/14).
