Grand Prix Move Could Create IndyCar-NASCAR Doubleheader

IndyCar has floated the idea of moving the GMR Grand Prix to 4th of July weekend with NASCAR's Brickyard 400, according to sources, should such a move be necessary due to coronavirus. The GP road course race kicks off the on-track action at IMS during the month of May, one weekend before Indianapolis 500 qualifying and two weekends before the race itself. This year’s GP currently is scheduled for May 9th, which is right around when the CDC’s eight-week event ban recommendation ends. IndyCar and IMS have confirmed that they are planning different scenarios for the month of May and Indy 500, if postponements are needed, but they have yet to officially announce any changes and have said they are hoping the situation subsides. Moving the road course race to the Brickyard 400 weekend could lead to previously untapped synergy, as this would become the first-ever IndyCar/NASCAR Cup Series doubleheader; IndyCar has run doubleheaders with NASCAR’s lower series. The topic of a doubleheader has been talked about repeatedly over the past 18 months by fans, media, drivers and industry execs, including IndyCar/IMS Owner Roger Penske, but it may end up being the coronavirus situation that spurs it into reality. IndyCar and NASCAR had no comment.
