Las Vegas Could Host Super Bowl After Canceled NFL Draft

The earliest Las Vegas and Allegiant Stadium would host the Super Bowl would be February '25ALLEGIANT STADIUM

While Las Vegas will no longer host the NFL Draft in late April due to the coronavirus pandemic, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell in a statement "included a note that the league will be evaluating Las Vegas for other events -- including the Super Bowl," according to Myles Simmons of the LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL. The NFL has "already set its Super Bowl schedule through" the '23 season, so the "earliest Las Vegas and Allegiant Stadium would host the championship game" would be February '25. In the past, there was a "bidding process for each city for the event," but that stopped in '18. Raiders President Marc Badain at a Las Vegas Stadium Authority board meeting in January said that the team "would be aggressive in pursuing a Super Bowl when the process starts." The "next opportunity for a Super Bowl to be awarded is presumably the league meetings in May -- assuming they go on as scheduled from May 19-20 in Marina Del Rey, California." There is "reason to believe the NFL may award Las Vegas a Super Bowl at that time" (LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL, 3/17).

MIAMI'S NEXT CHANCE: In West Palm Beach, Hal Habib reports it is "widely thought" that the '25 title game "could be bound for Las Vegas." Hard Rock Stadium "just hosted a successful Super Bowl in February," and Miami Super Bowl Bid Committee President & Chair Rodney Barreto has "long maintained an interest in acquiring any available Super Bowl." So, the "likelihood remains" that South Florida will be a "strong contender in the rotation" come '26. The NFL has used Super Bowls to "reward cities for building stadiums, but usually after those facilities have been up and running for a few years to work out kinks" (PALM BEACH POST, 3/17).
