Audience Analysis: NASCAR Up For Second Cup Race; WGC Down

With the Daytona 500 audience figures being hampered by rain, NASCAR got its first legit viewership comparison of '20 with the Las Vegas race this past weekend, and figures were up. Joey Logano’s win in the Pennzoil 400 on Sunday afternoon averaged 5.5 million viewers, up 8% from 5.07 million last year for the second race, which was from Atlanta.

THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH: Without Tiger Woods playing in the WGC-Mexico Championship this year, viewership fell for NBC and Golf Channel. Sunday’s final round, which saw Patrick Reed win, averaged 2.79 million viewers, down 18% from ’19. Golf Channel’s early coverage on Sunday afternoon averaged 709,000 viewers, down 43%. NBC was down 40% on Saturday, while Golf Channel was down 44%. Friday on Golf Channel was down 41%.

NOTES: ABC saw a sharp drop for 76ers-Bucks on Saturday night (1.71 million viewers). That is down 50% from 3.43 million viewers for Rockets-Warriors in the same primetime slot last year….ESPN averaged 705,000 viewers for the premiere of “D. Wade: Life Unexpected” on Sunday night at 9:00pm ET

The chart below lists viewership figures for select recent sports telecasts.

Also on the show, Poynter Institute senior writer Tom Jones shares who he has up and who is down in sports media.
