MLS Makes Second Spectrum Its Advanced Tracking Data Provider

MLS is partnering with Second Spectrum on a multiyear deal that sees the technology company become the league’s official advanced tracking data provider starting this season, which kicks off this weekend. "This is one of those rare projects where we really feel it could have great impact across our enterprise,” said MLS Senior VP/Media Chris Schlosser. “Bringing tracking data to the league can help our technical directors, our coaches and our GMs scout and analyze better the field of play. It can help our fan experience with enhanced broadcasts and digital content.” Second Spectrum, which has partnered with the NBA since the ’17-18 season and worked with the EPL for the past year, over the summer installed 10 cameras and its tracking system at each MLS venue. The company’s tracking system will capture data on all 22 players, the referees and the ball. Player information, which will be accessible through the cloud on any internet-enabled device, will include speed, acceleration, distance and passing probability, among other data points. The partnership will include all MLS matches in addition to competitions between MLS and Liga MX. The tracking data not only will be utilized by coaches and technical directors but embedded in online highlights videos, in the league’s app and eventually with broadcasts. Schlosser said that the league in the future will work with current partner MGM Resorts Int'l on determining how the new tracking information could enhance the fan experience via a sports betting feed.
