"Today" Show Profiles Browns GM Berry For Black History Month

NBC's "Today" during its celebration of Black History Month profiled Browns Exec VP/Football Operations & GM ANDREW BERRY in a segment called "Breaking Through" that focused on his impact on the team. NBC's Craig Melvin said the Browns, "looking to turn their fortunes around," hired Berry, and at "just 32 years old and the youngest GM in the NFL, he might be the new perspective that team needs." Melvin asked Berry how much "pressure" he feels personally to turn the operation around. Berry responded, "I don't know that pressure's the right word. It's really more excitement for me, that's really the overwhelming sense." Noting there are only two African-American GMs in the league, Melvin said, "The NFL, as you know, has been criticized for its, shall we say, lack of commitment to diversity in management. What are the benefits of having a diverse coaching staff?" Berry said it is "not just how old someone is or how someone looks or their gender," but it also is about "diversity of experience, diversity of thought process, cognitive diversity that allows different perspectives to come to the table when you're making decisions and trying to drive on-field results." Berry: "That ultimately creates a better product on the field" ("Today," NBC, 2/25).
