Marlins' Derek Jeter Confident Heading Into Year 3 Of Rebuild

As the Marlins begin Year 3 of the regime under Owner Bruce Sherman and CEO Derek Jeter, it is "time to turn a corner," and "nobody knows it better than Jeter," according to Greg Cote of the MIAMI HERALD. Jeter said, "We’re in a lot better shape as an organization now than when we took over. We should be a lot better this year than last year. We have a lot more talent. We have an organization that’s layered with talent.” Cote notes expectations were "very reserved the first two years of the new regime." Now they are "out there." The team’s Marlins Park FanFest in Year 1 of Sherman/Jeter "drew a paltry 5,000 fans." Last year it drew 12,000. This year’s FanFest "attracted just more than 17,000." Cote: "That’s anecdotal, but there seem to be indications the faith of fans is being restored by degrees" (MIAMI HERALD, 2/25). In Ft. Lauderdale, Dave Hyde writes, "It's Year 3 of this rebuild, and, well, I still don’t know what to make of the Derek Jeter Experience." Marlins fans know as "little about him now as ever." He has "never been through anything like this, much less led it." Hyde: "We don’t know if he’s happy as The Boss of this struggling franchise or if happiness is beyond the point" (South Florida SUN SENTINEL, 2/25).
