County Vote Clears Hurdle For F1's Proposed Miami Grand Prix

F1's proposed Miami Grand Prix "scored a major win in its battle against local opposition" as Miami-Dade commissioners tied 6-6 in a vote, meaning the "approval of both the city of Miami Gardens as well as the county will not be required going forward," according to Charles Bradley of MOTORSPORT.com. Dolphins Owner Stephen Ross can now "proceed with plans to build the track" within the grounds of Hard Rock Stadium. Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez said that a "number of concessions have been made to local residents following a meeting, including the removal of section of track planned to use the public road at NW 199th Street" (MOTORSPORT.com, 2/19). In Miami, Douglas Hanks notes County Commissioner Barbara Jordan's legislation was the "last hurdle before the commission standing in the way" of the race’s '21 debut in Miami Gardens, as it "would have stripped races as a permitted use in the zoning rules governing" the stadium. Moments after her anti-F1 legislation failed, Jordan said that her fellow opponents of the auto race had "filed a lawsuit against the Dolphins and Hard Rock to block the race" (MIAMI HERALD, 2/20).
