Boston Mayor Says Coronavirus Should Have No Effect On Marathon

Boston Mayor Martin Walsh "brushed off the idea of scaling back or shutting down the Boston Marathon" over fears of the coronavirus, according to Sean Cotter of the BOSTON HERALD. Walsh said that despite "fears the disease could turn into a pandemic, the April 20 race should be able to go ahead" as planned. He said, "We have to be very careful in overreacting to a situation that isn't there." Walsh noted that there is "only one confirmed case" of coronavirus in Boston, and that person is "being treated." On Monday, the Boston Athletic Association said it is "carefully monitoring" the spread of the virus ahead of the race. Meanwhile the Tokyo Marathon announced that it will "only let elite athletes run, shutting out tens of thousands of runners" (BOSTON HERALD, 2/19).
