Dundon, Hurricanes Awarded With NHL Stadium Series Game In '21

The NHL has had several site visits at Carter-Finley Stadium, which can seat more than 57,000 for footballGETTY IMAGES

The Hurricanes are "taking it outside," as the '21 NHL Stadium Series game will be played at N.C. State's Carter-Finley Stadium on Feb. 20, according to Chip Alexander of the Raleigh NEWS & OBSERVER. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said Hurricanes Owner Tom Dundon was "relentless" in his pursuit of an outdoor game. Alexander noted Dundon and President & GM Don Waddell have been in "constant contact with league officials about securing the game and in negotiations" with N.C. State AD Boo Corrigan in "securing Carter-Finley Stadium as the venue." The game has been "in the discussion stages for several months, and the NHL has had several site visits at Carter-Finley Stadium, which seats more than 57,000 for football." The confines of the stadium "should provide good sight lines for fans attending the game." Waddell said that "more than 50,000 people were expected to attend the game" (Raleigh NEWS & OBSERVER, 2/16). In Raleigh, Luke DeCock wrote the venue is the "important part." Like the NHL All-Star Game in '11, this is a "chance for the Triangle to show itself off as a hockey market, which it truly has become, and remained even during that long decade in the wilderness" when the team failed to make the playoffs (Raleigh NEWS & OBSERVER, 2/16).

ON THE OUTSIDE: ESPN.com's Greg Wyshynski noted there was "heavy speculation" that the Capitals, a "geographic and playoff rival, would get the call" as the Hurricanes' opponent in the game. But the Washington Post reported on Saturday that the Capitals are "not the opponent." Meanwhile, with the Hurricanes getting a Stadium Series event, there are now five NHL teams that have yet to play in an outdoor game: The Coyotes, Blue Jackets, Panthers, Lightning and Golden Knights (ESPN.com, 2/15).
