Pac-12 Yet To Decide On Early-Morning Football Games
Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott said there has been "no decision" as to whether the conference will schedule any 9:00am PT football games in the coming years, though he admitted Fox is "keenly interested" in the concept, according to Nicole Auerbach of THE ATHLETIC. Scott acknowledged that a group from the conference met with Fox execs last month about the early-morning kickoffs out west. He said, "I don't know if there'll be any that make sense for this upcoming season or 2021. But I'd like to see one of our teams try it. ... Some of our schools have expressed an interest." While some schools have pushed back on the early start time, Scott said most teams do play some games that start as early as 9:00am PT "when they play on the East Coast, when they travel for those games." However, Scott was quick to add, "The fan issue is a different issue and a serious issue. I completely respect that ADs and their schools have to think that through. That's why no one would ever be under an obligation [for a 9:00am game]. It would only be if they saw an opportunity" (THEATHLETIC.com, 1/20).
