NFL Franchise Notes: Jags Raise Questions By Keeping GM, Coach

In Jacksonville, Gene Frenette wrote Jaguars Owner Shad Khan's decision to keep coach Doug Marrone and GM Dave Caldwell is "going to be a tough sell for a beleaguered fan base." Khan has a "well-earned reputation as one of the NFL's most patient owners," but he "sure does keep testing the boundaries of insanity." If this "isn't the longest leash ever given [to] a coach-GM combo in recent NFL history, then it's certainly in the conversation" (FLORIDA TIMES-UNION, 1/1). CBSSPORTS.com's Jason La Canfora wrote Khan a year ago "found himself at this very same critical juncture." Then on Tuesday, at the "very same fork in the road, after another 10-loss season he did what he always does." La Canfora: "Status quo. All good. Nothing to see here" (CBSSPORTS.com, 12/31).

SURPRISE RETURN: In Phoenix, Kent Somers noted it appears that Cardinals GM Steve Keim will return for an eighth season despite the team going 5-10-1 this year, and that should be "confounding and infuriating to thousands of Cardinals fans." Keim's detractors can "wish, hope and pray for his departure all they want." However, it seems Keim and Cardinals President Michael Bidwill "got the two biggest decisions of the off-season right" with the hiring of Kliff Kingsbury as coach and the drafting of QB Kyler Murray. But Keim "missed on enough personnel decisions" in '19 to make fans "wonder if he's the same person who constructed rosters that won 34 games" in his first three seasons on the job (ARIZONA REPUBLIC, 1/1).

DOUBLING DOWN: Colts Owner Jim Irsay said that he "remains confident in the franchise's direction" after finishing the season 7-9 despite a 5-2 start. Irsay in a statement said, "I am confident in the steady leadership of [GM] Chris Ballard and [coach] Frank Reich, who have built a culture of trust, toughness and teamwork that you can be proud of" (INDIANAPOLIS STAR, 1/1).
