Shalala said the commission would identify issues of national concern related to the conduct of the NCAAgetty images

U.S. Rep. Donna Shalala (D-Fla.) is "not a fan of the NCAA," and she introduced legislation on Thursday to "create a two-year congressional commission with a sweeping mandate to examine" the organization, according to Brian Murphy of the Raleigh NEWS & OBSERVER. Under the legislation Shalala introduced with U.S. Rep. Ross Spano (R-Fla.), the Congressional Advisory Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics would "examine the links between athletics and academics, the financing of college sports, recruitment policies as well as NCAA policies on oversight, health and safety and rules enforcement." The commission would "include four people appointed by each of the Democratic and Republican leaders of the House and Senate and one person appointed by the Secretary of Education." The majority of members would "not be members of Congress" (Raleigh NEWS & OBSERVER, 12/20). Shalala said the commission would "identify and examine issues of national concern related to the conduct of intercollegiate athletics and the NCAA." In L.A., J. Brady McCollough writes the commission will "go far beyond simply helping pave a way forward for college athletes to receive compensation" (L.A. TIMES, 12/20).
