Mavericks' Doncic Taking Time In Selecting Brand For Shoe Deal
Negotiations "are ongoing" for Mavericks G Luka Doncic's new shoe contract, and right now "every brand is curious where he will land," according to ESPN's Nick DePaula. Doncic has been wearing various sneakers this season as a shoe "free agent." Jordan Brand, Under Armour and Puma are "all in the mix" to sign Doncic, but they are "just slow playing it right now." DePaula: "He's been mixing it up. He's worn Pumas in practice, hasn't worn them in a game. But they're holding out, they want to see what kind of offers that they can get and if somebody says the magic word 'signature shoe,' that might be what seals the deal." The process is a "really complicated version" of restricted free agency where if Doncic "signs with a brand, Nike has ten days to match" the offer ("The Jump," ESPN, 12/12). SI.com's Jarrel Harris wrote Doncic's sneaker free agency "couldn't have come at a better time," as he has "emerged as a serious MVP candidate" this season. His production has "exceeded expectations," and after a year where Bucks F Giannis Antetokounmpo and Pelicans F Zion Williamson received "big pay days from Nike and Jordan Brand respectively, Luka is definitely next in line to capitalize on a lucrative deal" (SI.com, 12/12).
