Charlotte City Council Still Debating MLS Stadium Upgrade Funding

Charlotte City Council members are "divided over how much they're willing to pay to bring" the 30th MLS team to the city, as an official expansion announcement "looms," according to Alison Kuznitz of the CHARLOTTE OBSERVER. Panthers Owner David Tepper "wants the city to contribute a substantial amount of funding tied to landing the soccer team," which includes money for upgrades to Bank of America Stadium. City Council member James Mitchell said that the city is "prepared to offer a much smaller incentive package than previously expected" -- about $100M, funded by "revenue from hospitality and tourism taxes." However, City Council member and Mayor Pro Tem Julie Eiselt said that the council has yet to "discuss specific dollar amounts and would not comment on what the city is willing to give Tepper for the stadium overhaul." She added, "I don't think it's appropriate. It's like saying, 'Here you go, Mr. Tepper. Here's a blank check.'" Kuznitz notes Las Vegas and Phoenix also still are "competing for the 30th team." This comes despite MLS Commissioner Don Garber having said that Charlotte's efforts have "moved the city's bid to the 'front of the line'" for an expansion team. City Council members "predict Charlotte will be awarded the MLS bid by the end of this year" (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 12/4).
