Bowl President Refutes Report Of NCAA, ESPN Nixing Barstool Deal
LendingTree Bowl President Jerry Silverstein said that the report that the NCAA or ESPN "nixed a potential title sponsorship" by Barstool Sports of the bowl game "is not true," according to Mark Heim of the BIRMINGHAM NEWS. Silverstein said that there was "never any contact with Barstool representatives" over a naming-rights deal, and that a proposal was "submitted through a third party." He said, "We had a third-party contact with several companies. Barstool was one of them. The bowl decided to go with LendingTree. [Neither] the NCAA nor ESPN got involved." Silverstein: "It never got to the NCAA or ESPN for denial. The bowl had other opportunities and went another way." Silverstein added that there were "'several' proposals submitted for the title sponsorship" (BIRMINGHAM NEWS, 11/27).
SMARTER, NOT HARDER: ESPN Events announced TicketSmarter has "entered in a multi-year agreement" to be the new title sponsor of Birmingham's bowl game (BIRMINGHAM NEWS, 11/27).
