Redskins Defer To Nike As Name Absent On Salute To Service Gear
The Redskins' Salute to Service gear during their game against the Jets "read simply 'Washington Football' around the team's logo," but the organization deferred to Nike on why the decision was made, according to Andrew Beaujon of the WASHINGTONIAN. Asked why their team name was not featured on the Salute to Service gear last week, Redskins Dir of Communications Sean DeBarbieri said, "This would be a question for Nike. They issue all of the NFL team gear." Yet Nike "hasn't replied," leading Beaujon to wonder if "someone involved with this tribute was skittish about using a slur about Native Americans, many of whom have served in the armed forces." A spokesperson for the Bob Woodruff Foundation, which partners with the league for the campaign, said, "While we are a proud NFL Salute To Service partner, we are not involved in any clothing or product design" (WASHINGTONIAN.com, 11/20).
