Big South Hoops Tournaments Will Be Held In Charlotte Starting In '21
The Big South Conference's men's and women's basketball tournaments "will be coming to Charlotte for three years" starting in '21, and will be played at the 8,600-seat Bojangles' Coliseum, according to Hannah Smoot of the CHARLOTTE OBSERVER. This will be the first time the Big South Conference basketball championships will be held in Charlotte, and the first time since '03 that the conference has hosted its basketball championships at a neutral site. The conference also will "host several other events during the championship week, including cheerleading competitions, fan festivals and possible concerts." The conference said that Charlotte was one of a "group of cities, including Winston-Salem and Hampton, Va., that were being considered for the neutral site venue" (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 11/20). Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority CEO Tom Murray said that discussions with the Big South, which has its league HQ in Charlotte, have "gone on informally for several years." In Charlotte, Erik Spanberg wrote adding this tournament "comes at the same time" that the CIAA's basketball tournaments are "leaving Charlotte for Baltimore." Murray said that the CIAA and Big South tournaments are "played in different weeks so the events would not have been in conflict" had they both been held in Charlotte (BIZJOURNALS.com, 11/19).
