Suns Officially Break Ground On New, $45M Practice Facility
The Suns this week held a "groundbreaking ceremony" for their $45M, privately-funded practice facility, which is part of the $230M "renovation project headlined by major upgrades for Talking Stick Resort Arena," according to Duane Rankin of the ARIZONA REPUBLIC. The 50,000-square-foot facility will feature "two basketball courts, private health and training amenities and offices for coaches, players and trainers" for the Suns and the WNBA Phoenix Mercury. Suns Owner Robert Sarver said players from both teams were "part of us planning this." He added, "We got the players involved early on. I've sat in design meetings with Deandre (Ayton) and Devin (Booker) in terms of the floor plan, what they envisioned." A 100-room hotel will "begin construction right beside the practice facility next year and there are plans to add new restaurants and office space in the area as well." Sarver said that in all, $350M will be "invested in the projects with the practice facility being a focal point." DFDG Architecture, Hunt Construction Group and ZGF are part of the team "helping make the facility a reality." The targeted completion date is Aug. 1, 2020 (ARIZONA REPUBLIC, 11/15).
