ESPN's Twellman Embraces His Bold Personality In Broadcast Role

ESPN's Taylor Twellman is "articulated and opinionated, perfect for TV," but he took the "opposite approach" as a player, according to Dan Caesar of the ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH. Twellman said that he did not have a "public style" during his playing career. Twellman: "I was a lot like Bull Durham when I played, gave the same (bland) quote. ... I was very plain, very Bull Durham cliche-ish." However, Twellman said of his broadcasting style, "This is more of who I've always been. For better or for worse" (ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH, 11/8). In N.Y., Andrew Marchand writes Twellman and play-by-play man Jon Champion will be on the call for Toronto FC-Sounders on Sunday as the MLS Cup "returns to ABC for the first time" since '08. ESPN "got it right" pairing the two together, as they are "one of the best, if not the best, game broadcast teams on the network." Though the announcers in the booth "may not increase ratings, having top quality can make an event feel bigger." Soccer has grown, but it is "still emerging on TV" (N.Y. POST, 11/8).
