NFL Franchise Notes: Chargers Struggle To Establish Home Support

In San Diego, Jeff Miller notes the Chargers have "struggled to establish themselves" in L.A. since moving before the '17 season. The atmosphere for "SNF" against the Steelers was "about as inhospitable to the Chargers as any home game yet." Dignity Health Sports Park was "packed with noisy Steelers fans waving yellow towels." The Chargers "play only once" at home until mid-December, and that Nov. 3 game against the Packers features another opponent with "feverish fans who could take over the stadium" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 10/14). In L.A., Mark Whicker writes "SNF" was a "three-hour rave" for Steelers fans. The Chargers "remain the only team in the NFL with no home advantage." The situation is "pitiable and it will not improve at the Inglewood pleasure palace next year" (L.A. DAILY NEWS, 10/14).

FAMILY FEUD: In Denver, Mark Kiszla wrote the absence of late Broncos Owner Pat Bowlen's "strong voice and steady hand has already hurt the Broncos’ on-field product, and a protracted legal dispute over control of the team" by Bowlen's kin "would only serve as a ball and chain in the pursuit of a championship." Kiszla: "Figure it out, kids." Or, "sell the Broncos to a new owner who can establish a new era of NFL excellence in Colorado" (DENVER POST, 10/13).

HOME SWEET HOME? In Nashville, Gentry Estes wrote the city is "not doing enough to support" the Titans on Sundays. Opposing NFL fans "turning out in force feels so routine as to not be alarming, sad as that might sound." Opposing fans were "well-represented" in each of the Titans' first two home games this season. The Colts "didn’t have as many as the Bills, but they still had plenty" (Nashville TENNESSEAN, 10/12).
