Maryland Unveils Plans For New Basketball Performance Center

The Univ. of Maryland athletic department plans to "build a new Basketball Performance Center for its men's and women's teams," which could "take up to three years to complete," according to Don Markus of the BALTIMORE SUN. The project will cost an estimated $36M, of which $19M has been "raised privately." UMD AD Damon Evans said the private funding will come from a "comprehensive fundraising campaign." The proposed 60,000-square-foot facility would "feature two full-size practice courts, locker rooms, a strength-and-conditioning space at least four times the size of the current one, a sports medicine wing and offices for both programs." UMD is currently the "only school in the Big Ten and only one of two Power 5 schools -- the other is Boston College -- that doesn't have an indoor practice facility for basketball" (BALTIMORE SUN, 10/9). The remaining $17M of funding will be done through "donations and athletic department revenues" (NBCSPORTSWASHINGTON.com, 10/9).

LOOKING AT LOGISTICS: In DC, Emily Giambalvo notes UMD is still "working to complete the Cole Field House project," which will turn the site into a $210M indoor football facility. Only $60M had been "raised as of last month." Given that project, UMD men's coach Mark Turgeon said that he had to "wait patiently for the new basketball facility." When asked about the expected completion date for the basketball center, Evans said, "As soon as possible." He added that this sort of project "typically takes about 36 months and the athletic department remains focused on completing fundraising." Opportunities for naming rights are "available, and Evans would not comment on whether Under Armour would be financially involved" (WASHINGTON POST, 10/9).
