Mayfield Using Family-Owned Entity To Manage Off-Field Deals
Browns QB Baker Mayfield has seen his marketing portfolio grow substantially since being drafted No. 1 overall last year, and all of his off-field deals go through Team BRM, a family-owned organization that "has a half-dozen staffers who handle everything" including his branding, endorsements, accounting, media and legal matters, according to Bill Shea of THE ATHLETIC. Mayfield's family for years has "owned a private equity buyout firm called Camwood Capital Group, and within that business structure is Team BRM." Mayfield's agents are Jack and Tom Mills of Capital Sports Advisors. Mayfield said that having the "business and financial infrastructure in place to protect his earnings, and bolster them with sound investments, allows him to concentrate on football." Team BRM "handles his off-field business during the season." Camwood had traditionally invested in precision manufacturing companies, but in '14 it "launched a venture capital arm called Camwood Ventures that invests" in startups. Mayfield has "put some of his money through that investment vehicle," which has backed companies like sports social media content publisher Wave, music-sharing app EarBuds and sports apparel line Where I'm From, which is the "official licensee of Mayfield merchandise." Mayfield's brother Matt said, "We target early stage growth companies where we think our brand and Baker's brand can add value and help the companies grow." Mayfield currently has deals with Nike, Bose, BodyArmor, Nissan Heisman House, Hulu, Progressive Insurance, Amazon Web Services, Panini America and men's formal footwear maker Allen Edmonds (THEATHLETIC.com, 10/7).
