New Memphis AD Veatch Looks To Make Early Imprint On Athletics
Univ. of Memphis AD Laird Veatch officially started his position this week, but it is still "much too soon to tell the exact imprint Veatch will make on Memphis athletics," according to Mark Giannotto of the Memphis COMMERCIAL APPEAL. Veatch said, "The key point is positioning Memphis to be in the best possible spot we can be to take advantage of whatever opportunities come. The only thing we do know from history is that there will be change at some point.” Among the constituents Veatch spoke to already is The Pictor Group, a Reno, Nevada-based consulting firm hired by the university to "conduct an external review of the entire athletic department before Veatch’s hiring." The review is also "focused on the Memphis women’s basketball program after allegations of abuse and harassment arose in recent months." But the reality is "despite some internal dysfunction, Veatch is inheriting a Memphis athletic department that’s probably in better shape than any of his predecessors inherited." There is a "passionate fan base and city invested emotionally and financially in the fortunes of the athletic programs" (Memphis COMMERCIAL APPEAL, 10/2).
