New Tech From Intel, Man City Lets Fans Pick Own Highlights
Intel and EPL club Manchester City today launched a tool that allows fans to customize their view of match highlights, the next phase in Intel's vision of overhauling the video presentation of sports. Fans will now be able to zoom in and pan on certain highlights to see the action from anywhere in Etihad Stadium, or even view the play from the perspective of one of several different players. Billed as "immersive highlights," the product builds on the "True View" technology that uses high-speed processors to stitch together multiple camera angles that first launched in '17. Its full capacity is still limited by processor speed and game rights agreements, but Intel Sports VP & GM James Carwana said it is a watershed expansion of the technology. "A highlight no longer needs to be with 100% certainty a passive highlight," he said. "A highlight now allows for interactivity. If you look at it from that level, it's a monumental jump. You go from zero options to actually having options." Intel believes installing dozens of video cameras around a stadium, enabled by ever-improving processing speeds, will ultimately create products that will benefit sports fans, teams and players. The company also is working on applications for training and sports medicine.
