United Center Unveils New 8,600-Square-Foot Jumbotron

The United Center unveiled its "new jumbotron" that features 8,600 square feet of displays, making it "four times larger than the outdated scoreboard that it replaced," according to Ben Pope of the CHICAGO SUN-TIMES. Although its "much-advertised drop-down technology was not used" during yesterday's unveiling, the rest was "fully functional." The main screens "showing the live camera feed and replays during stoppages are significantly larger and higher-quality than before, and the actual scoreboard portion no longer looks straight out of a 1970s suburban rink." During pregame introduction, the wraparound panels above and below the main screen are "integrated into the video presentation," but during play, they will only display sponsors’ logos (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 9/16). In Chicago, Jimmy Greenfield notes players and fans in the seats closest to the ice "will be able to see video screens that are located underneath the scoreboard" (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 9/16).
