Anaheim Mayor Wants Any Deal With Angels To Benefit Community

Officials are expected to meet by October to discuss a long-term deal to keep the Angels in AnaheimGETTY IMAGES

Anaheim Mayor Harry Sidhu said that any deal to "keep the Angels" located in the city "should benefit the community by adding parks and affordable housing, offering residents well-paying construction jobs, and creating an ongoing source of revenue to fund city services," according to Alicia Robinson of the ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER. Anaheim and Angels officials are "expected to meet by October to begin discussing a long-term deal" to keep the team in Anaheim. Sidhu, speaking yesterday ahead of a City Council meeting on the ballpark lease, "stressed keeping the Angels local." But he "also made clear he wants 'fair market prices' for any land sold or leased" to Angels Owner Arte Moreno for development. Sidhu "didn't elaborate" on whether revenue generated by the team could "come from a bigger cut of ticket sales or parking, or from advertising and concessions." Anaheim already has "commissioned an appraisal" of Angel Stadium and the surrounding parking lots. Anaheim City Council member Jose Moreno said that he is "leaning toward selling the land to the Angels, and he also supports community benefit provisions and charging a fair market rate for use of the city's assets" (ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER, 8/28).
