McGee was the only AD to ever be hired at Southern Cal without any previous ties to the schoolUSC

Former USC and South Carolina AD MIKE MCGEE died of natural causes on Friday at his home in Montrose, Colo. He was 80. McGee was the Gamecocks' AD from '93-'05 and served as the Trojans' AD from '84 "until midway through" the '92-93 season (AP, 8/16). McGee was the only AD to "ever be hired" at Southern Cal "without any previous ties to the university." He "weathered criticism over his efforts to transition the department into a modern collegiate athletics enterprise." As fundraising and department revenue "rose over his tenure, those changes would make a tremendous difference for the future of USC's athletic department" (L.A. TIMES, 8/16). McGee left a "tremendous legacy by founding Sports Management Institute, which has produced an incredible number of ADs" (TWITTER.com, 8/16).

FOOD NETWORK: Fox Sports' COLIN COWHERD is opening a restaurant, "Colin Cowherd's The Herd: Burgers, Bets & Brews," near his home in Manhattan Beach, Calif., in October in "partnership with Zislis food group" (LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL, 8/16)....Steelers QB BEN ROETHLISBERGER has backed out of a "plan to open a restaurant" in Pittsburgh so that he can "devote his full attention to the upcoming season." Roethlisberger "originally planned to open the 7,100-square-foot restaurant, dubbed North Shore Seven, last spring" (PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE, 8/16).

NAMES: A new film reveals a "slice of life rarely seen" about four prominent female NFL ownership figures. “A LIFETIME OF SUNDAYS” features Bears Principal Owner VIRGINIA MCCASKEY, Lions Owner & Chair MARTHA FIRESTONE FORD, the Chiefs’ NORMA HUNT and Steelers’ PATRICIA ROONEY. The “enlightening movie" tells the story of a "generation of American women who, while never thinking of themselves as feminists or career women, became exactly that.” The film debuts Sunday on ESPN at 1:00pm ET, and also will air on ABC at 3:30pm ET on Sept. 1 (USA TODAY, 8/16)....Trail Blazers G CJ MCCOLLUM will appear on the season premiere of HBO’s “THE SHOP: UNINTERRUPTED,” alongside LEBRON JAMES, SpringHill Entertainment CEO MAVERICK CARTER, KEVIN HART, ROB GRONKOWSKI, Cavaliers F KEVIN LOVE, rapper LIL NAS X and marketing exec PAUL RIVERA (Portland OREGONIAN, 8/17)....Celtics C TACKO FALL, F GRANT WILLIAMS and G CARSEN EDWARDS on Friday “accompanied a bunch of children from the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children on a trip to Canobie Lake Park.” The group was also joined by Celtics co-Owner & Managing General Partner STEPHEN PAGLIUCA (BOSTON HERALD, 8/18).

IN MEMORY: Longtime Spurs media services assistant PETE ANTON died Saturday “from complications following a stroke.” He was 93. Anton was the Spurs’ “longest-tenured employee and the NBA’s oldest active employee,” having been with the team for 46 years (SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS-NEWS, 8/19).
