Coco Gauff, Ashleigh Barty To Play Exhibition During ATP Event In N.C.

Barty and Gauff will play a two-set match before the men's singles and doubles quarterfinals matcheswinston-salem open

The ATP Winston-Salem Open will "hold its debut women’s exhibition match on Aug. 21," featuring Coco Gauff and Ashleigh Barty, according to Ethan Joyce of the WINSTON-SALEM JOURNAL. Barty, the reigning French Open champion, will face off against Gauff in a "two-set match that will appear in the thick of men’s competition." The pairing will take the court at 7:00pm ET "before the men's singles and doubles quarterfinals matches." Tournament Dir Bill Oakes said, "This is our first women’s exhibition, and so we felt like we needed to make sure whatever we put forth was a reasonably, high-quality match." The conversations with the two players "happened at different times." With Gauff, Oakes said that the Winston-Salem Open "connected with her after the Wimbledon success." Oakes got in touch with Barty at Wimbledon about "securing her appearance in Winston-Salem." Turns out, she "had some familiarity" with the event because her agent "represents a few players who competed in previous tournaments" (WINSTON-SALEM JOURNAL, 7/31).
