WFAN's Francesa Beats ESPN's Kay In Latest N.Y. Sports Radio Battle

Both shows are ratings successes, outperforming all other N.Y. stations in the key demo regardless of genreGETTY IMAGES

WFAN's Mike Francesa finished first overall in the N.Y.-area spring radio ratings, which covers March 28 to June 19, edging ESPN Radio 98.7 N.Y.'s Michael Kay in "another close race between the afternoon shows," according to Neil Best of NEWSDAY. It appeared two months into the ratings period that Francesa "would win comfortably, but Kay had a better June, narrowing the gap to an even closer finish than in the winter." Both shows are "ratings successes, outperforming all other New York stations in the key demographic regardless of genre." Kay’s show is "by far the most popular on his station." WFAN "crushed ESPN every other time of day" (NEWSDAY, 7/11). In N.Y., Andrew Marchand writes Kay "has to be happy with the results." When it comes to the demographic of 25-to-54-year-old men, Kay's program "topped Francesa's." However, Francesa’s program "does not include his digital stream, whereas Kay’s does." ESPN looks at it as a "second straight win for Kay," while WFAN thinks it is the "status quo for Francesa." Meanwhile, the drama inside the stations "will continue." Kay just had vocal cord surgery that will "leave him mute for three weeks, while Francesa is, well, Francesa." At WFAN, Francesa’s "cloud hovers above the whole station’s future" (N.Y. POST, 7/11).
