Audience Analysis: Mexico-U.S. Delivers Strong Gold Cup Final

The Concacaf Gold Cup final on Sunday night, which saw Mexico defeat the USMNT, drew 8.9 million viewers for the English- and Spanish-language broadcasts. Univision averaged 5.9 million viewers alone for the Spanish telecast, marking the best figure for any men’s soccer match this year to date. The 5.9 million viewers also was higher than the 5.5 million viewers on Telemundo last year for the France-Croatia men’s World Cup final. FS1’s TAD of just over 3.0 million viewers also marked the cable net’s best non-World Cup soccer audience on record. For the entire Gold Cup, FS1 and FS2 were flat in viewership compared to the ’17 tourney (453,000 viewers). Univision, UniMas and TUDN averaged 1.3 million viewers for the tourney, down from 1.4 million viewers two years ago.

AROUND THE HORN: NBC Sports Philadelphia is averaging a 4.4 local rating for Phillies games through the All-Star break, up 23% compared to the same period last season. Meanwhile, NBC Sports Chicago is averaging a 1.2 local rating for White Sox games, marking the best figure since ’14, when the RSN was averaging a 1.4.

NOTES: Piggybacking off the Women’s World Cup final, Fox averaged a total audience delivery of 1.63 million viewers for Red Bulls-Atlanta United on Sunday afternoon, marking the net’s most-watched MLS match on record and the best figure for any MLS match on English-language TV since Freddy Adu's debut in ’04 (and second-best all-time for an MLS regular-season match)....ESPN2 drew 1.36 million viewers for the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest on July 4, marking the event’s best figure since 1.95 million on ESPN in ’11....ESPN last month saw gains once again for its morning shows. In the 7:00-8:00am ET window, “SportsCenter” was up 9% compared to the same window last year. “Get Up!” from 8:00-10:00am was up 21% in June, while “First Take” from 10:00am-12:00pm was up 6%....NBCSN is averaging 290,000 viewers through Stage 4 of the Tour de France, marking the event's best start since '16 and up 23% from 235,000 viewers last year. Viewership for each stage has increased over last year, marking the first time since '10 that each of the first four stages has shown an increase over the prior year....ESPN on Friday night drew 1.61 million viewers for Pelicans-Knicks, marking a record audience for an NBA Summer League game as Zion Williamson made his debut with the Pelicans. The previous Summer League record was 1.11 million for Lonzo Ball's debut with the Lakers two years ago against the Celtics.
