Despite No All-Star Game, Harper Still Among MLB's Most Marketable

Phillies RF Bryce Harper is "neither the best player nor even the best right fielder in baseball," but he is the "most recognizable and marketable player in the sport, a brand unto himself," according to Scott Lauber of the PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER. Harper "exhibits a level of engagement that is considered unique and has forged a close relationship with many of his partners." While Harper will not be at tonight's MLB All-Star Game, the "Bryce Brand is ubiquitous." He has a dozen active corporate partnerships that "range from classic sports or baseball-related companies" such as Rawlings and Topps, to non-traditional ones like Hallmark and Jaguar. Harper is also an investor in N.Y.-based men's grooming company Blind Barber, and later this year, he will become the "only active baseball player with a signature line of non-cleated turf trainers." Blind Barber CEO Matt Breen said that Harper even "helps pick out fragrances" for his line with the company. Meanwhile, Harper "insists that none of it distracts from his day job." His brand may "extend beyond baseball, but it's baseball that enables him to cultivate his brand," so Harper "schedules most of his commercial shoots and other endorsement obligations for the offseason." Harper's agent, Scott Boras, said, "For him it creates the needed distraction from the game. When he gets into his products dynamics, there's a passion that comes through" (PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, 7/7).

GETTING AHEAD OF THEMSELVES: In DC, Julia Karron noted though Harper did not make the NL All-Star Team, his "visage has made its way to Cleveland, emblazoned on banners that adorn the city." It appears that MLB "printed the posters with players they'd assume would be on the rosters before the official announcement was made on June 27" (NBCSPORTSWASHINGTON.com, 7/8).
