Former N.Y. Times Sports Editor, ESPN Ombudswoman Schreiber Dies

LE ANNE SCHREIBER, the first woman to "run a major American daily newspaper’s sports section" when the N.Y. Times appointed her as sports editor in '78, died on Friday at 73, according to Richard Sandomir of the N.Y. TIMES. Schreiber was an "untraditional choice" for the post, as she had "never covered sports for a daily newspaper." But Schreiber reported for Time magazine from the '76 Montreal Games, prompting BILLIE JEAN KING to "name her editor of her magazine, womenSports." Schreiber later in her career served as ESPN's ombudswoman for two years, from '07-09 (N.Y. TIMES, 6/5).
