Goodell's NFL Preseason Comments Spark Studio Discussions

Studio shows continue to discuss possible changes to the NFL schedule, with ESPN's Adam Schefter saying Commissioner Roger Goodell's comments on reducing preseason games are "setting the table for the expiration" of the current CBA. Schefter said after the '20 season, he thinks that the "preseason will be shortened." ESPN's Dan Orlovsky added Goodell's comments will give "players leverage" in CBA negotiations ("NFL Live," ESPN, 6/4). ESPN's Bomani Jones said he does not think the NFL will reduce the number of preseason games because the league is "in this for the money," and no one is "trying to cut into growth in that way." Jones added if the league were to cut two preseason games and add two regular season games, the players "aren't going to be going for that" ("High Noon," ESPN, 6/4). ESPN's Sarah Spain said preseason games "might be useful to the coaches but they're certainly not useful to fans at full price." Spain: "Players can talk all they want about player safety, but as soon as that CBA gets negotiated and they get more money and there are more roster spots and there's more cap space to spend money on those roster spots, I think they might sing a different tune." The Athletic's Frank Isola said, "If the players believe that they can make more money, they can be convinced" to go along with a longer regular season ("Around The Horn," ESPN, 6/4).
