League Notes

In Boston, Ben Volin notes the Chiefs’ proposal to change OT rules "officially died" yesterday at the NFL owners’ spring meetings. The plan, which "would have given both teams an opportunity to possess the ball in overtime, came in response to the Chiefs’ loss to the Patriots in the AFC Championship game." The Chiefs’ proposal was tabled in March and was "never brought to a vote" because it "didn’t have enough support from the 32 owners" (BOSTON GLOBE, 5/23).

UP FOR REVIEW? In N.Y., Larry Brooks wrote the NHL is "reviewing everything except why NHL officiating is in a state of crisis." Brooks: "We are not reviewing protocols. And we are not reviewing the performance of Colin Campbell and Stephen Walkom, the two league executives charged with overseeing and running the operation." The "answer to this officiating mess that has been a long time coming is not to dramatically expand video review." It is to provide officials with "better direction, perhaps a new protocol," and to "revamp the officiating department" (NYPOST.com, 5/18).

TIME FOR CHANGE? ESPN’s Mike Golic said he hopes the NFL "goes down the road of medical marijuana or marijuana for pain instead of opioids." Golic: "I also don't want to go overboard and say every time a guy smokes a little marijuana, it was for pain and not enjoyment.” ESPN’s Mike Golic Jr. said, “They need to look into doing away with (the policy). The way we look at marijuana in this country has changed” (“Golic & Wingo,” ESPN Radio, 5/23).
