Sabres Unveil Two Commemorative Logos Ahead Of 50th Season

The Sabres opted for a simple approach to utilize the different elements in the team's current primary logoSABRES

The Sabres' celebration of their 50th season will feature two anniversary logos "emblazoned with the number 50," but each having a "slightly different approach to honoring the milestone season," according to Lance Lysowski of the BUFFALO NEWS. The team "opted for a simple approach to utilize the different elements in the team's current primary logo." However, some fans "expressed disappointment on social media over the team's continued use of navy blue, as opposed to the royal blue worn by the team" at its inception in '70. The primary commemorative logo has a Buffalo "placed below two crossed Sabres, with each blade stuck through a large number 50 and the years of the milestone seasons," '70 and '20, displayed. The alternative crest, which will be "used for various marketing campaigns, has a smaller primary Sabres logo, including the Buffalo and two crossed Sabres, placed on top of one bigger Sabres sword" and situated between '70. A large number 50 is "situated above the primary Sabre sword" (BUFFALO NEWS, 5/20).

OUT-OF-THE-BOX: In Boston, Kevin Paul Dupont wrote the Sabres hiring Ralph Krueger last week as coach was a "bold, unorthodox move," given that Krueger was "all but out of hockey for the past five years" as he served as EPL club Southampton Chair. Krueger's soccer experience "doesn't buy him immediate cred when trying to guide" a hockey roster, but credit is due to Sabres GM Jason Botterill for "not reaching into the coaching fraternity recycling bin" (BOSTON GLOBE, 5/19).
