Stronach Group Founder Frank Stronach, whose company owns Pimlico Race Course, said that he is "saddened by the breakdown in talks over the track's future and that all options -- including a complete rebuild -- should remain in play," according to Jeff Barker of the BALTIMORE SUN. Frank Stronach and his daughter, Stronach Group Chair & President Belinda Stronach, have been "embroiled since last year in an explosive legal struggle and spending dispute about the business." Frank Stronach said in an email that he is "going through difficult and sad times." He added that he had a "plan years ago to 'rejuvenate' Pimlico," but that it was "rejected by the company." Stronach: "The key is that we explore what's better for Maryland and the neighborhood. It has not been properly discussed. You want to have a forum where you put everything on the table." The Stronach Group yesterday "had no comment" on Frank Stronach's remarks. Barker notes there are "no current talks between the company and the city" over what to do with the track. Frank Stronach said that he "plans to attend the Preakness" on Saturday. He said that he does not "think it's awkward" for him to attend the race, as the "horsemen know me" (BALTIMORESUN.com, 5/16).
UNFORTUNATE TIMING: In Baltimore, Miller & Campbell noted crews have "repaired a water main that broke outside" the main Pimlico entrance Tuesday, days before Preakness crowds "descend upon the track." As of yesterday morning, a "large hole remained outside the main entrance." Pimlico officials said that it would be "filled by the end of the day." The break "comes amid scrutiny of Pimlico's outdated infrastructure and speculation about the Preakness' future in Baltimore" (BALTIMORESUN.com, 5/15).
