Get Out Of The Water: Long Beach State Picks Sharks As Mascot
Long Beach State has picked the Sharks as its new mascot, completing a "months-long process to replace Prospector Pete," according to Emily Rasmussen of the Long Beach PRESS-TELEGRAM. Sharks beat out Stingrays and "Go Beach" in a three-day vote among students last week. The school in a statement indicated that the choice made sense "because of the university's renowned Shark Lab ... and the campus' proximity to the beach." LBSU will "begin a year-long development process to determine the visual look of the mascot." LBSU removed Prospector Pete as its mascot about six months ago "following years of criticism that he was offensive to indigenous people." The school nickname had been the 49ers, and the term "49er" will "remain an informal nickname for anyone affiliated with the university" (Long Beach PRESS-TELEGRAM, 5/11).
