NBC Taking Advantage Of Final-Day Drama For Premier League Coverage

Liverpool will play on NBC needing a win and a loss by Manchester City to claim the EPL titleGETTY IMAGES

All 10 games of the EPL's final match day on Sunday will "air across NBCUniversal platforms, but the most attention" will be on Manchester City and Liverpool as they seek a championship, according to Joe Reedy of the AP. Wolverhampton-Liverpool will air on NBC, while Man City-Brighton & Hove Albion will air on NBCSN. Liverpool trails Man City by one point in the race for the title. NBC has "aired all games on all its platforms on the final day since it started airing games" in August '13. NBC Coordinating Producer Pierre Moossa said that the audiences for Man City and Liverpool will be "receiving constant updates on how each team is doing with frequent picture-in-picture look-ins at key moments." Moossa said that with 10 games going simultaneously, there are "myriad challenges, including making sure each game gets in and out of halftime seamlessly, as well as giving all teams their due diligence on the final day." Reedy noted NBC and NBCSN are "averaging 420,000 viewers per match," which is "even with last year" (AP, 5/9).

PREMIER PUNDITS: THE ATHLETIC's Ryan Bailey wrote despite their "disparate backgrounds, the camaraderie and chemistry" between NBC EPL analysts Robbie Earle, Rebecca Lowe, Robbie Mustoe and Kyle Martino is "startlingly sincere." The fact that "no changes have been made to the studio lineup in six years of broadcasting is surely testament to their enduring appeal." NBC's on-screen talent, production team, show principles and close relationship with host broadcaster Sky (NBC uses clips of Sky's studio segments) have "created a near-perfect alchemy." Fans and pundits alike are "typically affluent with praise when asked about their coverage." While the NBC crew "often keeps things light, much praise has also been given to their handling of more serious topics," such as Man City F Raheem Sterling's calling attention to racist abuse in the sport (THEATHLETIC.com, 5/7).
