Texas Tech and AD Kirby Hocutt have "agreed to an extension that increases his base compensation" to $1.5M annually and runs through August '27, with the contract "expected to total more" than $12M over the eight years, according to a front-page piece by Carlos Silva Jr. of the LUBBOCK AVALANCHE-JOURNAL. Hocutt is "scheduled to see his base compensation increase" 3% each year, starting Sept. 1. Under Hocutt’s watch, the men’s basketball team "secured a share of the Big 12 Conference title -- a first -- on the way to advancing to the program’s inaugural Final Four and championship game in the NCAA Tournament." The Texas Tech baseball team has also "reached the biggest stage, advancing to the College World Series three of the last five seasons to go along with two Big 12 titles." Hocutt served as the CFP Selection Committee Chair from '16-18 (LUBBOCK AVALANCHE-JOURNAL, 5/7). Texas Tech President Lawrence Schovanec said that the school’s athletic programs "have enjoyed unprecedented success as a result of Hocutt’s leadership and development" (AP, 5/6).

SET UP FOR SUCCESS: Hocutt prior to the news of his extension said the Big 12 has "never been stronger" in the eight years that he has been at Texas Tech. He said of the conference's new media rights deal with ESPN that has a strong emphasis on ESPN+, "Technology is changing. Content consumption is ever-changing. I see it with my two teen-age boys every day and how they consume their content, especially with sports. I think the digital world is the world of the future. I think the Big 12 Conference is at the forefront of that." He said of how that deal could affect Texas Tech's third tier deal with Learfield Sports: "We don’t know yet. Right now we have one year with Learfield selling the rights to Fox. We’ll continue to monitor and work through. But the potential for us as a league and therefor us for Texas Tech in 2024-25 is significant by creation of this digital platform" (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 5/4).
