Red Sox Manager Alex Cora Will Not Visit White House This Week

Red Sox manager Alex Cora "will not join his team" when they visit the White House on Thursday in recognition of their '18 World Series title, according to Michael Silverman of the BOSTON HERALD. Cora's "discontent over the extent of the federal government's aid and assistance in the Hurricane Maria recovery effort" in his native Puerto Rico is his reasoning behind the decision. Cora said, "The government has done some things back home that are great, but as the report (in Puerto Rican newspaper El Nuevo Dia, which broke the story) said, we still have a long ways to go. That's our reality. It's pretty tough to go celebrate with where we're at." Cora said that he "made up his mind a few days ago" and that the Red Sox "organization supports him" in his decision. Cora: "It's an option, it's not mandatory, and I talked to them a few days ago about it, and they were OK with it" (BOSTON HERALD, 5/6). In Boston, Chad Finn notes Cora is the "first coach or manager of a championship team to choose not to go to the White House when some of the team is going." Cora's decision is "news," because the "state of politics in the country is so divisive and contentious." Had Cora decided to go to the White House, it "might have been bigger and certainly more surprising news" (BOSTON GLOBE, 5/6).

INDIVIDUAL DECISIONS: In Boston, Peter Abraham in a front-page piece notes the "decision whether to visit the White House has roughly split the team." Red Sox RF Mookie Betts, SS Xander Bogaerts, P David Price, CF Jackie Bradley Jr., C Christian Vazquez and 3B Rafael Devers all "made the same decision" to not attend the visit. The Red Sox have said that the "trip is optional for all players, coaches, and staff members." Red Sox Owner John Henry and Chair Tom Werner said that they would attend, as have President & CEO Sam Kennedy and President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski. The Red Sox were "originally scheduled to visit the White House in February but that was postponed because of the government shutdown" (BOSTON GLOBE, 5/6).
