Grant Hill Among Five New Appointees Named To NCAA BOG

Hill's addition is part of an NCAA effort to diversify voices and outlooks at the leadership levelGETTY IMAGES

Basketball HOFer and Hawks Vice Chair Grant Hill will "become one of five new members" to serve on the NCAA BOG later this year, with the move fulfilling "one of the key recommendations made by the Commission on College Basketball -- adding perspectives from outside campus leadership," according to the AP. Joining Hill on the board will be former American Express CEO Ken Chenault, Association of American Universities President Mary Sue Coleman, former U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy and President Obama's former Chief of Staff Denis McDonough. Four of the five new members "will begin their full terms in August." Coleman will "serve a one-year transitional term" and a full-term replacement will be "nominated by the Executive Committee next spring." The NCAA said that it "received more than 150 nominations from the general public and considered more than 250 candidates before selecting the final five" (AP, 4/30). YAHOO SPORTS' Pat Forde noted the five new appointees will join 16 NCAA BOG members who are college and university presidents and chancellors from D-I, D-II and D-III. The additions are "part of a diversification of voices and outlooks at the NCAA leadership level." After the Commission on College Basketball made its proposals in April '18, a recommendation for the independent BOG was "drafted last summer and it was approved at the NCAA convention in January" (SPORTS.YAHOO.com, 4/30).
