Barstool's Goodell-Based Paint Scheme For Talladega Rejected

Barstool Sports' planned paint scheme on Go Fas Racing’s No. 32 Ford for next weekend's Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race at Talladega was rejected because it included an image of NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. It is not clear whether the paint scheme, which would have included the image of Goodell wearing a clown nose that Barstool has made popular over the last few years, was rejected by the team, NASCAR or both. NASCAR has a new ad deal with Barstool this year that includes a presence around the Talladega weekend, and Barstool was in talks to add a car sponsorship component to the weekend. Barstool Sports Founder Dave Portnoy last week revealed the situation on his radio network, though he did not specify the team. Sources said that it was Go Fas Racing and that the deal was for two races at a mid five-figure price point per race. The other race would have been Bristol Motor Speedway’s night race this summer. NASCAR President Steve Phelps has a long history with Goodell, as Phelps worked at the NFL for nearly 14 years before joining NASCAR. Additionally, the sport clearly wants to maintain good relations with Fox Sports, which will air the race and is an NFL partner. Barstool and the NFL have been at odds over multiple issues in recent years. Portnoy indicated that he cut off talks with the team after the paint scheme was rejected as opposed to looking at using a different image. NASCAR declined comment.
